The Criterion and Fox Lorber (Winstar) transfers are not enhanced for widescreen TV. The coloring of the various presentations is a matter of taste, each presentation has its own problems but the Criterion & Fox Lorber transfers sport the most natural color palette, the Fox Lorber being a little softer. The HKL DVD offers a very fine presentation throughout but has a softened look and is slightly too bright (pic#2) and zoomed in. The Hong Kong Video Theatrical Cut is very clean & well defined but with a red tint in some scenes (pic#4). HKVs extended cut is not only the longest but also the least cropped version (pic#3). The Fortune Star shows good definition but it's too grainy and too bright (pic#3) and the coloring is off occasionally (pic#4). Note: The theatrical cut on the French DVD has no English subtitles and the extended cut's subtitles are poor (pic#2). |
