| The two old transfers (first and collector's edition) are nearly identical. The new 40th Anniversary Edition's anamorphic transfer was downconverted from a newly restored Hi-Def master, based mainly on two grain master positives (the original 35 mm film negative is lost). It is presented in a ~ 1,66:1 cinema projection aspect rato. Director Kubrick may have preferred the ~ 1,37:1/1,66:1 multiaspect ratio of the old Edition (in fact, the tranfers varies from 1,32:1 to 1,66:1) and some picture compositions look better this way (pic#6, pic#10), but not all (pic#4). The new transfer - including the film's stock footage - has been cleaned up somewhat in varying quality (better: pic#2, worse;scratches blurred out: pic#1). While all transfers sport good compression, the new transfer is darker, with lower contrast, losing some details (pic#5), and gaining some (pic#3). A few scenes are now too dark (pic#7), while some originally dark scenes have been carefully brightened up (pic#8). Overall the new transfer has slightly better detail resolution, less aliasing, less edge enhancment and fewer digital artefacts. It displays less print damage and the darker tone and aspect ratio are closer to the original theatrical exhibition. | ||||||||||||
