directed by Sidney Lanfield
USA 1948

Sometime prior to his musical endowments took over Dick Powell did some fine Film Noir work, but the western "Station West" stands out as an unusual blend of the 'black cinema' style and the cowboy genre. Powell never easily succumbs to the spurred tough guy role - it takes a healthy fist fight for us to eventually buy-in. Noir notable Jane Greer as the femme fatale gives another sterling performance and Frank Fenton's snappy dialogue really adds to this fast-paced and complex story. Harry J. Wild's cinematography is another desirable plus. Basic premise is gold and the flux of small town power illegally controlling its movement out of town. Powell comes in as an undercover military investigator and swiftly establishes a reputation as a trouble-maker. Lots of thriller/catch-the-bad-guy atmosphere and it is definitely worth adding to any collection. Raymond Burr gets a precursor taste of his role as Perry Mason, by playing a lawyer. A memorable piece that comes highly recommended!

Comments

Just like all previous home video releases of Station West, the made-on-demand disc from Warner Archive comes from an edited theatrical reissue. The cuts were made directly to the nitrate camera negative and Warner's attempts to locate the original release version were unsuccessful to date. (The film was cut from 8286 ft to 7125 ft, according to RKO’s master records) The new progressive transfer may seem a little soft in captures below, but it is miles above all previous home video releases, including French DVD compared here. The frame looses just a sliver of information on the top, but opens up the remaining 3 sides. Gone is a tinted haze and chroma evident in previous interlaced transfer. The blacks are deep and the damage is minimal. There were a few shots with noticeably different contrast during a heist scene. The mono soundtrack is adequate and without any distortions and per usual standard for the Warner Archive, there are no subtitles or captions. A stellar western noir that deserves rediscovery and this Warner Archive release is a good presentation. Hopefully, one of these days, the complete version is discovered.
