This lush adaptation of Homer's grand epic "The Odyssey" stars KIRK DOUGLAS as the hero Ulysses. After victory in the Trojan War, Ulysses embarks on a ten-year journey back to his kingdom. But before he can reunite with his beloved wife (SILVANA MANGANO), he must defeat the brutal Cyclops, escape the spell of Circe who turns his crew into swine, and outwit the Sirens who lure sailors to their death. Peril is everywhere – even at home, where the arrogant Antinous (ANTHONY QUINN) plots to steal Ulysses' wife before he can complete his final quest in this powerful tale of heroism. |

Lionsgate make some funny choices on what to bring out on DVD. This, 1954 Kirk Douglas, version of the King of Ithaca, came out on DVD by Fox Lorber way back in 1999 HERE. There is no doubt in my mind it was an inferior edition to this one - but that is no high complement. This transfer is progressive but has some frailty on a single-layered disc. There are plenty of artifacts and the image is hazy, but colors are brighter than one might expect considering the condition of the print utilized although no where near the brilliance that Technicolor can support.
The absolute best part of this DVD is the English DUB - it's so out of sync with the Italian (and French) language performers that it's like Woody Allen's What's Up Tiger Lilly? Brawny Kirk is in-sync with his original voice but I had some bona-fide fun watching this. There are optional subtitles in English or Spanish. There are no extras. It's forgotten that there are segments of story dealing with a Cyclops and Circe turning men into pigs. VERY cool! With it's sword-and-sandal roots the film can bring back many youthful memories of onscreen myths and adventures. Kirk is great - so is Anthony Quinn. This is a fair price if you are keen - Yes sireee - I will definitely watch it again - such are my bizarre tastes. |
