(aka 'Wa-Ni Wa Jun-Ha', 'Waneewa Junah', 'Wanee & Junah' <English> - 'Icon of Cool' - working title)

directed by Yong-gyun Kim
South Korea 2001

Animator Wanee and screenwriter Junah are in love and live together to give each other comfort. However, one day, the return of Wanee's stepbrother and her first love (Youngminn) recalls the fading memories of Wanee's puppy love. Under the same roof, Wanee's house is filled with memories of Junah and Youngmin. The queer coexistence of present and past love leads to an unexpected confusion in their minds...
Directed by Kim Yong-kyun, Kim Hee-sun, Joo Jin-mo and Cho Seung-woo played remarkably well in the trio love affairs, with the coexistent scenes of memories and the present.

Comments:
ADDITION: Edko - Region 3 NTSC - April 07': Unfortunately the Enter One is out of print and DVDBeaver have received many emails about obtaining an alternate version as it was included in our TOP 100 Desert Island DVDs listing.

The long and short is that the OOP Enter One is superior in every area but as beggars can't be choosers the Edko may make for a stop-gap approach replacement. The Edko is interlaced and exhibits the same unusual frame jumping from scene to scene. It is single layered while the Enter One is dual layered. Subtitle translation seems the same as are some of the extras with the Enter One offering more but neither have English subtitles.

The Edko offers a great film at a decent price just not at the same digital standard as the Enter One but those with tube systems probably won't notice the difference.

This is a wonderful movie. The video quality is superb and the story, simple yet engrossing. The animation sequences are well done. There are two watercolor-type sequences that bookend the film, a sketchbook that comes to life and a computer-animation sequence that was made by Wanee to communicate her feelings to Junah.

On the Enter One DVD: The audio is generally very quiet. I had to crank up my system (not good for me since I'm using a DVD drive, TV-out card and a 5.0 stereo which produces some noise at high volumes). I did jump though when something suddenly came out the rear speakers. The dialogue is fairly sparse and there's a bit of silence, but that silence is meaningful. The subtitles are quite good, with only a couple very minor complaints not worth getting into.

DVD is film-sourced and 169 oar 185, with excellent shadow detail, almost perfect black level and wonderful colors. Zero edge enhancement! There's a problem though and that is that around every scene change the picture jumps up and down for about a second. And it's not just the film, the deleted scenes do the same thing. Very strange. I would given it 5/5 for pq if it wasn't for this pesky artifact. You do get used to it after a while though.  Jeroen

  • Though the sleeve indicates that this DVD is encoded for Region 3 only, it is actually All-Region.
  • Through subtitle translation or purposeful artistically made self awareness the fact that Wanee's half-brother is the product of an adulterous affair by her father is not readily made clear.
