(aka 'La terra trema: Episodio del mare' aka 'The Earth Trembles')
Directed by
Luchino Visconti
Italy 1948
In the poor Sicilian village of Aci Trezza the fisherman have been exploited for generations. Tired of the endless cycle of poverty, a young soldier returns home from war and convinces his family to strike out on their own. Tragically, his plan to change the system is met with a cruel blow that pushes them even further under water. Shot on location with non-professional actors, Luchino Visconti's haunting second film remains a masterpiece of Italian cinema as well as a 'landmark Neorealist work' (Turner Classic Movies). |

Entertainment One's dual-layered transfer is interlaced (see last capture). I couldn't immediately place my hands on my Image Entertainment DVD from 2002 HERE. Now OOP. I recall it being progressive but not as sharp as this. The trouble with the E1 is the contrast is poor - a shade green - and it looks very thin/frail. Without getting too picky it gives a consistent presentation for CRT. One telltale sign of a sloppy authoring job is when you click on the 'Set-up' menu you see a sub-heading 'Scenes' above the optional English subtitle choice.
The audio is about what I might expected - dialogue is audible, but there are imperfections on the region FREE NTSC disc. There are no extras to share the 2.5 hour feature. This film is an absolute masterpiece and it REALLY deserves better - a Blu-ray would be appreciated. It looks like the source elements are decent but this SD transfer is... unfortunate. |
