directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
West Germany 1969

This film observes a group of friends and neighbors, whose typical day consists of idling at the local bar or sitting outside waiting for nothing in particular, gossiping, and lamenting their economic predicament. The slow boiling frustration over their stultifying existence occasionally flares up into displays of petty resentment amongst themselves, but the arrival of a Greek immigrant (played by Fassbinder) is quickly seized upon as an opportunity to redirect and magnify their anger in an explosion of xenophobic violence.

The photography and stylized mise en scène match the starkness and potent directness of the story, while Fassbinder's troupe delivers quiet, confident performances, the brittle veneers of their characters penetrated by the camera's unmoving gaze, their seething cores exposed. Although this is among Fassbinder's earliest full-length features, his command of the medium is already in evidence, and it compares favorably with his later, better-known works.

Comments

This is another superb restoration by the Fassbinder Foundation, with an image that's clean and exhibits the right amount of grain and acutance one would expect from the source material. The fairly high contrast photography of cinematographer Dietrich Lohmann is well represented.
