"The beautiful Tanya returns to her small mining town, after supposedly working as a model in Moscow. She decides to marry her shy school sweetheart Mishka, who now works in the mine. The miners finally receive some pay, but Mishka still ends up with no money to buy his bride a gift, so he seeks the help of his perpetually drunk buddy Garkusha. Mishka's poor working-class family all help to put on a fine wedding with copious amounts of vodka, even though they are suspicious of Tanya's occupation in Moscow, and of her connection with her Mafia ex-boyfriend Borodin."

Comments:

The Wedding (aka Dogma's Celebration  Russian Style). The photography was shot mostly by hand-held camera, and it reminded me of Dogma style (hence, the comparison). (By the way, the cinematographer (Aleksandr Burov ) worked a lot with Sakurov including his last picture, "Father and Son").

1.66:1 non-anamorphic transfer is otherwise what is expected for Dogma-style film, with nice colors and a little grain. 2.0 Russian soundtrack is very clear. Optional English subtitles translate the dialogues and some songs in verse without errors. This is Region 4, but NTSC. There's also French Region 2 disc, but there're no English subtitles listed in the specs.          Gregory Meshman
