(aka "Tokyo.Skies")

directed by Hiroshi Ishikawa
Japan 2003

"Commercial director Hiroshi Ishikawa's directorial debut is a drama about six women who attempt to make it in current day Tokyo. Harsh reality, loneliness, fragile dreams, subtle romance. Only the skies above Tokyo can see all those things. Living their everyday lives the best and worst they can. For them, every little moment becomes a ritual of the ordinary and the exciting, a balancing act for their dreams and hopes as the days perpetually tug on their heartstrings. "

Comments:

Another beautiful transfer from Region 2, Japan.  The film has a very distinct look, heavily influenced by the style of Wong Kar-Wai; the color schemes utilized are beautifully reproduced.  No visible edge enhancement, no compression artifacts.  Some slight graininess in dark scenes, clearly a  limitation of the source elements rather than of the DVD transfer.  Tiny specks of dust occur within the frame occasionally. Yoko Kanno's haunting soundtrack (which here plays out in a rather hushed, cinematic style rather than in the style of her earlier anime works) is exquisitely reproduced, invoking a brilliant sensation of sky and space. out of .
