(aka 'Second Skin')

directed by Gerardo Vera
Spain 2000

A finely crafted film about the inability of a middle aged man to come to grips with his own homosexuality. The pressures he feels are subtle but have a profound effect on his usual untouchable persona. Regardless of his supporting wife and lover he is torn apart by the eventual disparity of his family life at odds with that of  his sexual liaisons with his Doctor lover. Keen and insightful, director Vera does not overplay his hand and produced a warm and compassionate story bridged on eventual tragedy.  out of

UPDATE (January 2004):

We have been told by Nicholas Gordon (thanks Nick! ) that there is a Spanish DVD of this film available from DVDGO.com in PAL (as Region 0). Most interestingly he says it is in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio making the Ny'er Pan and Scan. It has 5.1 sound and English and Spanish subtitles. The distributor is Manga and it is 16X9 enhanced.

A relatively weak effort by New Yorker, but the marginally poor picture quality in no way interferes with the films enjoyment. It appears that the PAL to NTSC problem New Yorker was rumored to have in the past may be prevalent again. A soft image with a blue haze over it compounds the lack of substantial Extras features. I enjoyed the film and don't blame the DVD but not a lot of effort was put into this.  out of  Gary W. Tooze
