Jan Dara

directed by Nonzee Nimibutr
Thailand 2001

"The third film of Thai director Nonzee Nimibutr is an overheated art-house melodrama, dripping with sexual desire, secret loathings and disturbing acts of revenge. Based on a bestselling and controversial erotic novel published in 1966 and set in pre-Second World War Thailand, Jan Dara follows the life of its titular character from his birth to his early teens -- when our sympathies are with him -- then skips to his adulthood, when a marriage of convenience gives him the revenge he has patiently awaited and, with it, the bitter realization that he has become the thing he most despises."

Comments:

'Jan Dara' is the first Thai film I have ever seen and I have my doubts that they are all this sexually charged. The cast includes Christy Chung, a Canadian born Asian (Voted the Sexiest Woman in Asia 2000 by FHM magazine) who is not adverse to show her body. She is given ample opportunity starring in Jan Dara. This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival September 12th, 2001 receiving warm if not scorching reviews. I enjoyed the film itself and the competent anamorphic DVD transfer by Seville. It does not appear to be film sourced, but there is no visible edge enhancement. Black levels are true and skin tones ( of which there are a lot) are vibrant. It shines above the Korean R3 ( 0 ) release and is an interesting film with a solid transfer. There are no extras to speak of but I give this DVD out of
