directed by Carlos Saura
Spain 1998

Driven along by an intoxicating mixture of traditional love ballads and an almost balletic score by Argentinian Lalo Schifrin (famous as the guy behind the Mission: Impossible theme), Saura paints a picture of love gone sour and transmuted into creative energy. His treatment ultimately stretches the usual triangle -- one man, two women, with inherent situational lashings of jealousy and danger -- to include not only his feelings about the opposite sex, but about Argentina's violent history. It's grand obsession mounted grandly, full of motion, ritual and sensual heat. And Tango, commensurately, is a simply unforgettable film. See it, if you like dance -- or even if you don't. It may well change your mind.

Comments:
What  a mess this all is. The two anamorphic version are out of ratio. The Columbia Tri-star has actually zoomed into the image. Colors are likewise all over the place. It's hard to know which is most true.

The subtitles on all have weaknesses - the Metronome font is puny and unclear, the Filmax is not anamorphic and they even put the subs outside the frame and the Columbia is a horrible intrusive color.

Per Olof says: 'How can a distributor miss the 5.1 sound, of a film with almost constant music background? Where the Filmax 5.1 version sounds fantastic, and
contribute the picture and acting to became a entire film experience, the
Metrodome 2.0 sound feels very narrow and limited.
'

This is a decent film, but no proper 16X9 DVD version exists. I suggest going with the Filmax until a better one comes along.
