(aka "Full Moon In Paris")

France - 1984

This 1984 Eric Rohmer Comedies & Proverbs feature is about a young woman who doesn’t realize that she doesn’t know what she wants. While plot turns are guessable, you never really know what is going to happen to the characters. The heroine lives with her boyfriend in a suburb outside of Paris, but she also maintains an apartment by herself in the city and spends a lot of time there alone. As the film advances, she and her boyfriend become more and more distant from one another, but neither is ready to acknowledge it until something happens that forces their hands. As with all of Rohmer’s films, the characters are vividly drawn and superbly performed, so to be in their company is an extreme pleasure despite their emotional ups and downs.

Comments

NOTE: The below Blu-ray captures were taken directly from the Blu-ray disc.

ADDITION: Potemkine Films - Region 'B' - Blu-ray (December 2013): I have already stated- I now own the Coffret Rohmer intégral combo blu ray + livret + pochette photos [Blu-ray] - it is 25 Rohmer films and 52 discs, book and more! So it will take a while to go through. My take so far is very positive. I will continue and, hopefully, at one point do a page on the entire set including the bonus discs (although extras don't seem to be English-friendly the features I have checked so far have optional English subtitles).! So it will take a while to go through. My take so far is very positive. I will continue and, hopefully, at one point do a page on the entire set including the bonus discs.

Full Moon in Paris gets a 1080P transfer making it the only one of the three digital editions compared here (and probably in the world) to be the correct theatrical running time (no PAL speedup.) It looks much better than the SDs with cooler skin tones, more information the frame (notably on the side edges), tighter, richer colors, more detail, brighter overall image etc.

We get lossless, original mono audio, optional English subtitles and extensive extras (only in French - no subs) plus two DVDs in the package to handle the almost 4 hours of supplements. Another strong positive for the Comedies and Proverbs Blu-ray set from Potemkine and the entire Rohmer box. Tremendous value.

***

ON THE DVDS: Looks like both come from the same print, so they have similar sharpness. The Fox has been artificially brightened and was taken from a PAL source (see times) and of course has burned in subtitles. The Fox is cropped a little on the right edge and on the bottom. The Arrow Films has good film grain and superior Extras and is the overall winner.
