(aka 'Kanzo sensei' or 'Dr. Akagi')
directed by Shohei Imamura
Japan 1998
Dr. Akagi is a rural physician in Japan, on a one-man quest to find the cure for hepatitis. But this is at the time of WWII, and the country seems more interested in winning the war. As his fanatical quest continues, the nicknamed "Dr. Liver" finds himself in disfavor of the Japanese Army. As the war seems more and more hopeless, Dr. Akagi becomes a constant scapegoat. With the cure continuing to elude him, he begins to lose touch with those around him, and the primary reason for being a doctor. |

Comments: | The Region 0 SRE version is cropped vertically and more importantly appears to be significantly shorter than the Premier Digital (including taking into account PAL speedup). In image quality the Premier is superior with a sharper picture. The Premier also has a 5.1 soundtrack to the SRE's 2.0 . The Premier Digital image, even if quite strongly edge-enhanced, is the winner between these two even if it is only a DVD - 5 (single layered). The obvious problem is the lack of English subtitles for the Premier Disc. The SRE has slightly better extras. |
